SING YOUR WAY TO WHOLENESS...
Last weekend it was my birthday and so this year I had decided to treat myself - I booked myself on to a short course at Schumacher College on the Dartington Estate near Totnes. The course was entitled "Find Your Voice" and, though I didn't know quite what I was expecting, it blew my mind.
I am not going to give away any of the integral (and at times, intimate) details of the event but I do want to mention about the utterly transformative power that is held within each and every one of us..... our voices. Every cell in your amazing body holds the blueprint for the fullness of who you are. There, beyond all the conditioning, controlling, shunning, hiding, avoiding, and rejecting that you have consciously and unconsciously done, sits your potential, and this amazing workshop with vocal coach, Ruari Edwards, helped me to access this energy through singing.
From an early age I learnt to stay small - it was safe to be small. Don't get me wrong, this was not because I had abusive parents, far from it, but they were fully invested in the patriarchal cultural story from their own childhood so the intergenerational conditioning was passed down epigenetically and also further imprinted by the education system and peer pressure. This is especially relevant for women, who have been supressed and controlled for hundreds, if not thousands of years.
It is difficult to put into words, therefore, the immensity of feelings that arose throughout the weekend as I experienced the joy of true resonance within my body - the moments, however brief when my whole body came alive and sang. And the exhileration came not only when I fully expressed myself through song but equally when all the other participants in their own time dug deep and found that place of power and alignment within themselves. It was freedom. It was magical. It was sheer beauty.
